Cost guide
Walk-in tub cost in Utah: what changes the price
Direct answer: A Utah walk-in tub price is the tub plus the work your particular house needs. The model and its features set the starting point, then the age of your plumbing, your water heater, an electrical circuit for jets or a heater, wall repair and travel to rural areas move it. Ask for a free written quote that itemizes each of those. Current Utah pricing is on the Aging Safely Baths Utah page.

The tub itself
Walk-in tubs come in a few broad classes, and each step up adds parts and labor:
- Soaker: door, seat, grab bar and anti-scald valve, with no motors. The simplest to install and to clean.
- Air jets, water jets or both: a blower, a pump or both, plus controls. Water-jet systems move bath water through internal plumbing, which matters with Utah's hard water.
- Wider or bariatric models: wider doors, higher weight ratings and more water to heat.
- Comfort add-ons: inline heater to hold bath temperature, heated backrest, faster drain, handheld shower.
Our advice is the same one we give on every call: choose the class that fits the person, then add only the features they will use every week.
What your Utah house adds
Two families can buy the same tub and pay noticeably different totals. In Utah, these are the usual reasons.
The age of the house
Older homes are common along the Wasatch Front. Census figures show 46.6% of Salt Lake City homes and 45.1% of Ogden homes were built before 1960, compared with 2.9% in Washington County. An older bathroom can mean old drain lines, a tub set in a mortar bed, plaster walls or a floor that is not level. None of that is a reason to avoid a walk-in tub, but it is labor, and a fair quote says so before the work starts.
Hot water
A walk-in tub can hold more water than a standard tub, and you sit in it while it fills. If your water heater is small or old, the quote may include a larger heater or an inline tub heater. Replacing a gas water heater in Utah has to be done by a certified person under state law. See the winter hot-water check before you decide.
Electrical
Jets and inline heaters run on electricity, and many models call for a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit. If your panel is full or far from the bathroom, an electrician's time is part of the price. A soaker with no motors usually skips this cost.
Hard water
A water softener is not part of a tub quote, but if you are choosing a model with water jets and your home has no softener, factor in the upkeep. Our Utah hard water guide has the utility numbers.
Distance and permits
Installation reaches every part of Utah, but a remote address in the Uintah Basin or southern Utah can add travel time. Some cities require a plumbing permit for a tub replacement; the quote should say who pulls it.
Installed or supply-only
Installed means one company is responsible for the tub, removal of the old one, plumbing, any electrical work, the fill test and cleanup. Read how a Utah install works.
Supply-only means the tub is shipped to your Utah address and your own contractor installs it. It lowers the tub invoice, but you also pay your contractor, and Utah law requires a licensed plumbing contractor for work on the plumbing system. To compare fairly, add your plumber's written labor price to the supply-only price.
What a fair quote lists
| Item | The question to ask |
|---|---|
| Exact model | Brand, model number, length, width, door side and door swing |
| Features | Which jets, heater, drain type and shower are included |
| Removal | Is taking out and hauling away the old tub included? |
| Plumbing | Is a new valve or drain work included? What if the old drain is cast iron or damaged? |
| Hot water | Will my water heater fill this tub? If not, what is the upgrade and who installs it? |
| Electrical | Is a dedicated circuit included if the tub has jets or a heater? |
| Walls and floor | What tile or wall repair is included, and how is hidden damage handled? |
| Permit | Does my city need one, and who pulls it? |
| License | What is the Utah DOPL license number of the contractor doing the plumbing? |
| Warranty | What covers the shell, the door seal and any motors, and for how long? |
| Schedule | Delivery date, install days, and what happens if a second day is needed |
A quote that will not go in writing, or a price that only holds if you sign tonight, is a quote to walk away from. Aging Safely Baths gives every quote in writing with no in-home sales presentation. More on that in their guide on avoiding overpaying for a walk-in tub or roll-in shower, and the national walk-in tub cost breakdown.
Ways to lower the total
- Skip features you will not use. A soaker with a good seat and door is often the right tub.
- Use a VA grant if you qualify. HISA pays up to $6,800 or $2,000 over a lifetime, depending on eligibility.
- Ask about the Medicaid Aging Waiver. It lists environmental accessibility adaptations among its services for eligible Utahns 65 and older.
- Rural homeowners 62 and older with very low income can ask USDA Rural Development about Section 504 repair grants.
- Go supply-only if you already have a licensed plumber you trust.
All of these are explained, with eligibility and phone numbers, on our help paying in Utah page.
