Provo, Orem and Utah County
Walk-in tubs in Provo and Orem
Direct answer: Utah County is the youngest county in Utah, with a median age of 25.5, so a walk-in tub here is often part of planning for a parent. Put it in a main-floor bathroom if you can, measure the path in, and check the water heater. Mountainland Department of Aging and Family Services (801-229-3800) handles state aging programs, and veterans can start at the VA clinic in Orem.

A young county with older neighborhoods
Provo's median age is 23.7 and Orem's is 26.9, well below the state's 31.7. Still, the county has 53,214 residents 65 and older, and the housing is older than the population: 46.3% of Provo homes and 37.5% of Orem homes were built before 1980. In a split-level or two-story house, check whether the bathroom the parent will use is up or down a flight of stairs.
Disability rates among older residents differ a lot between the two cities. In Provo, 42.2% of residents 65+ report a disability; in Orem it is 26.1%. For a family deciding between a tub and a roll-in shower, that is a reminder to plan for how mobility may change, not just how it is today.
Planning for a parent
- Choose the bathroom the parent can reach every day. A tub in an upstairs bathroom does not help someone who can no longer climb stairs. A main-floor bathroom, even a small one, is usually the better spot.
- If a parent is moving in, plan the bathroom before the move. It is easier to install a tub or a curbless shower before someone depends on that room.
- Bring the person into the decision. Seat height, door swing and control placement should suit the bather, not the person paying.
- Check the water heater. A household that adds a parent also adds showers and laundry. Our winter hot-water check shows why that matters in a Utah January.
Renting in Provo
Only 39.9% of Provo homes are owner-occupied, so many residents rent, including older adults. Any permanent bathroom change needs the owner's written permission. If that is not possible, grab bars, a transfer bench and a handheld shower are safer stopgaps.
Water in Utah County
Utah County water is hard, like most of the Wasatch Front. Provo and Orem each publish an annual water quality report; look for the hardness or calcium figures in the table. If you choose a tub with water jets, plan for the cleaning routine in our Utah hard water guide.
