Walk-in tubs in Ogden

Direct answer: Two in three Ogden homes were built before 1980, and 36.3% of Ogden residents 65 and older report a disability, the second-highest rate among Utah's 16 cities of 50,000 or more, after Provo. A walk-in tub works in most older Ogden bathrooms, but confirm the path in, the drain and the wiring in a written quote. The Weber Area Agency on Aging (801-625-3770) and the VA clinic in South Ogden are the local starting points for help paying.

Ogden's housing and what it means for a tub

Ogden is one of the older cities on the Wasatch Front: 45.1% of its homes were built before 1960 and 66.5% before 1980. In a two-story house of that age, the full bathroom may be upstairs or reached by a narrow stair, and the original tub may be cast iron.

Three things to settle before you order:

  1. The route in. Measure every doorway, landing and stair turn between the front door and the bathroom. A walk-in tub does not flex, and the installer needs to know its width and length will make every turn.
  2. The floor. A filled walk-in tub with a bather is heavy. In an older home, ask the installer to look at the floor under the tub, especially if it has had past leaks.
  3. The bathroom the person will actually use. If stairs are getting hard, a main-floor bathroom may be the better place, even if it means a smaller tub or a roll-in shower.

Disability and planning ahead

In Ogden, 36.3% of residents 65+ report at least one disability, and 47.8% of those 75+. Across Weber County the rate is 31.7%. If walking or self-care is already hard, compare a walk-in tub with a roll-in shower before you decide; the roll-in shower guide from Aging Safely Baths is a good place to start.

Local help

Water and winter

Ogden publishes an annual water quality report with its hardness and mineral figures; most Wasatch Front water is hard. Northern Utah winters also bring colder water into the house, which affects how much warm bath water a heater can deliver. Our installation guide shows the math, and the hard water guide covers care for jets and seals.
